In my previous description of Dagobah, I discussed only the entrance to the Innermost Cave via elements of Greek mythology and, of course, the aptly named Cave of Evil. We return to the Innermost Cave of Dagobah. For instance, Geonosis is portrayed as a hot planet, which the sunlight helps establish. Alternatively, sometimes, the story just calls for other descriptions. In short, descriptions aren’t always perfect because of irony. Specifically, Anakin Skywalker becomes more protective than ever over the ones he loves and more independent while Obi-Wan Kenobi becomes more overcautious and stubborn. Our heroes become cemented in their fears rather than face them. The three characters do not change, and their flaws become stronger. Nonetheless, the Innermost Cave of the Prequel Trilogy takes place at the Petranaki arena on Geonosis in the light. A common literary technique, situational irony is the opposite of what is expected.Īs I mentioned before, the Innermost Cave is typically dark and somewhere below the surface. This description picks up on common fears of the dark and unknown.īefore we move onto more in depth analysis of the Innermost Cave, I want to discuss situational irony. Going to death’s door allows the reader or viewer to connect with the character, even if they don’t share their immediate fear.īoth the Underworld and Hell are both described (typically) as dark places beneath the earth’s crust. Our character also need to face an incredible trial of their greatest fears. These are both places where the souls of the dead go, and our character is metaphorically dying.Ģ. ![]() Writers rely on atmosphere, setting, symbolism, and various other pieces in order to portray the character’s inner struggle to the readers or viewers.įor the Innermost Cave, writers borrow elements from Greek mythology’s Underworld and Christian mythology’s Hell. In The Force Awakens, Maz's Castle serves as The Innermost Cave for our heroes Finn and Rey.Īfter leaving Maz's Castle, the, once cowardly, Finn learns he is more afraid of losing his newfound allies than being caught by the First Order while the stubborn Rey faces the reality of her family and destiny.
